Directions for using Writing Tracker
Writing tracker is about developing focus, fluency and form. The idea is to write for five minutes about a topic/subject, then count the number of words. On the data graph, mark the number of words for each 5 minute write then connect the dots as the writing progresses. The content area or subject generator is for brainstorming ideas for writing. In a classroom, writing about specific classroom topics in addition to topics/subjects that are personal as well. These topics/subjects can be identified in advance. For example. on Monday, students in elementary would write about what they are studying in Social Studies, perhaps something from history. In a specific content area, students would write about whatever they were studying at the time - reflecting on their learning and understanding of the specific topic. At the end of the writing and documentation on the students might share what they've written with a partner. There is flexibility in how this process works but ultimately it is about improving focus, fluency and form in writing which is a profound cognitive exercise. A reflection page is also available to use periodically for students to reflect on their growth from this process. Having students write using various text structures is an excellent way in which to challenge students to think in other ways to approach a subject/topic in writing. Text Structures information is on the next page. Writing Tracker / Integrating Text Structures
